Spotlight on Singapore

UV/FX was approached by Magnum Opus, a multidisciplinary design studio located in Singapore, to collaborate on the design and production of an exhibit to be housed in the newly constructed National Trade Union Congress Awareness Centre in Singapore.

The result of the six-month collaboration was a dual image exhibit panel designed by UV/FX designer, Jon Craine. The photorealistic images, which were rendered manually by Craine, were based on reference material provided by the client and additional research done by Craine.

"The client wanted the artwork to tell the story of the Singapore Trade Union's historical struggle and triumph during the mid to later twentieth century," says Craine. But the client wanted something dynamic to make the stories of these pioneers vibrant and engaging.

So, rather than going the direction of a one-dimensional exhibit of static photos and boring text, UV/FX offered the client a dynamic means to present their story: a dual image that would magically transition between the stories through the addition and subtraction of ultraviolet light.

The dual image, which is one of UV/FX's signature effects, consists of a single substrate that contains two images: one, which is visible under ambient light, and another that is only visible under ultraviolet lighting. "When the ambient white light in the environment is eliminated and the ultraviolet light is introduced," says Richard Green, president of UV/FX, "the ambient image vanishes and is replaced by an incredibly vibrant and colorful UV image."

As you can see in the accompanying project photos, the range of color and detail that can be achieved by UV/FX is stunning and can only be produced by UV/FX. "We're not talking about hokey black light art, here," says Green. He continues, "Our custom formulated UV pigments, in combination with our experience and design know-how, sets us way beyond what anybody else is doing, or is capable of doing."

The piece also included a third image, which was produced by digital video. The ambient image was designed to incorporate a projection area for the video, which heightened the dynamic nature of the exhibit.

Magnum Opus's Project Designer Lai Yee concludes, "The Experience Room was the highlight of the exhibition. All were impressed. I received personal congratulations from the Prime Minister [of Singapore] immediately after the show! So, let's give ourselves a big pat on our backs and look forward to doing something bigger and better."

UV/FX Launches New Website and Identity

Los Angeles, CA— UV/FX.com has new look. After a successful 2005 and early 06’ which saw the completion of major projects in Singapore (see article above) and Hong Kong among many others, UV/FX sought to revamp its image to coincide with the company's new direction and internal restructuring.

The updated website reflects the company's new visual identity. The fresh branding was propelled by Principle Richard Green's decision to take the company in a new and exciting direction. "It was time to take what we've learned over the years and apply it to new markets," says Green.

UV/FX plans to extend its signature ultraviolet effect (Day to Night, Dual Image, Single Image, Complete Invisible and UV 3-D) to architectural interiors, experiential marketing, themed attractions, museums, Custom signage and digital printing. "For a long time we thrived on producing backdrops for touring acts," says Green, "but that market is no longer where interest in UV/FX is exclusively and for us it's time to expand into other applications." Key to this expansion is the cost-effective nature of UV effects and the growth of our design team and it’s production capabilities.

Green also plans to make a push back into the film industry. "When I first started in UV Effects in the late 80’s, we worked on so many film and TV Shows like The Doors, Batman Returns, Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey, Star Trek etc…but then the well dried up as low cost CGI became available in the early 90’s. UV/FX plans to change this by re-educating the industry on the practical uses of UV lighting and scenery.

The backbone of this new direction will be the company's commitment to expanding its creative and technological resources and services. Green wants "art directors and designers to know that we are no longer just a production studio creating beautifully hand painted custom scenery." UV/FX is now a full service design and research studio, with new applications available to design professionals, and numerous UV applications in development.

Green concludes, "we have taken strides towards this direction and now we are there."
